It's the evidence-based medical specialty that uses lifestyle therapeutic approaches, such as a predominantly whole food, plant-based diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, stress management, avoidance of risky substance use, and other non-drug modalities, to prevent, treat, and, oftentimes, reverse non-communicable disease, sometimes referred to as degenerative chronic disease. This important meeting brought together physicians from the American Medical Association, the American College of Physicians, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and several other specialty societies with the express purpose of developing a set of lifestyle medicine competencies that should be adopted by all primary care physicians.
Additionally, with the advent of technologies to assist in these types of laboratory measures in becoming mainstream, lifestyle medicine areas, including diet, physical activity, stress responses, and environmental factors, will begin to merge with the outcomes of these tests, resulting in clinicallyapplied personalized lifestyle medicine approaches to most favorably address a patient's condition.



29,30 The major barriers for the implementation of Lifestyle medicine are factors derived from the disease itself and from its treatment, such as lack of motivation, low self-esteem and confidence; or side effects such as sedation or weight increase associated with pharmacological treatment.

Your contribution may be implementing and testing interventions that are feasible and effective in the primary care setting, inspiring medical colleagues to look for simple ways to emphasize healthy lifestyles in their clinical practices, educating and encouraging young clinicians to develop a comfort level with prescribing lifestyle medicine early in their careers, and advocating for healthcare reform that will support clinical practices to offer intensive health behavior change counseling and assistance services.
AJLM focuses on: Recognizing and addressing the impact that lifestyle decisions and activities have on health; Emphasizing the interaction between traditional therapies (e.g. pharmaceuticals, nutritional products, etc.) and lifestyle modalities to treat disease and achieve superior outcomes; Highlighting and providing information about therapies that minimize the extent to which illness impacts lifestyle.

We are faced with a challenge: on one side, preventive approaches (lifestyle modifications) are generally not recommended or adopted due to multiple etiologies: lack of time, knowledge and skills by primarily medical giver, lack of economic benefits to commercial companies and the biggest challenge of mankind to make a change in oneself behavior, even an unhealthy one.
