Autism Diagnosis

To diagnose autism spectrum disorder , doctors and psychologists evaluate quantitative criteria using tests and questionnaires, but also qualitative criteria, like interests, stereotyped movements, difficulties with eye contact and language and isolation. But while autistic girls show similar test results to autistic boys, the clinical manifestation of their condition differs, at least in cases where language has been acquired. Children and youths with ASD are more vulnerable to peer victimisation, especially bullying, at school. The younger they are and the lower their level of social skills, the more severe the victimisation is. Moreover, our results highlight the occurrence of complex PTSD in these children and youths who are victims.
Reasons for the increased frequency of sleep disturbances in children and youth with ASD may include differences in melatonin metabolism,431 developmental disruption of other neurotransmitter systems critical to sleep, and lack of social expectations, among other explanations. The most common cause of both delayed sleep onset and night wakings are learned behaviors. As with other children, the evaluation of the child with ASD with delayed sleep onset, night wakings, and/or early-morning wakings should include a history of comorbid medical conditions that might disrupt sleep, such as gastroesophageal reflux, seizures, asthma, allergies, eczema, or enuresis.

She curses herself, wondering how anyone could be so stupid and pathetic. Consent for publication was obtained from all individual participants included in the study. Although we chose to explore victimisation in its various aspects, bullying remained the main focus of this study. Conversely, some forms of victimisation, like sexual victimisation—which is more common in girls —might have been underestimated due to a predominantly male sample. In the ASD group, we found no significant difference of victimisation depending on gender, the parents’ marital status, the subjects’ type of schooling, the presence of an individual teaching aid or clinical status for ADHD co-morbidity. We found no significant correlation between the victimisation scores and the cognitive profile of IQ sub-scores in the ASD group.
In a 1985 book she defined autism as “a reactive process of adaptation to an ordeal” in which the “affective or symbolic relationship with the mother” has been lost. Such arguments, combined with Dolto’s opposition to feminism, and assumption that it was preferable for a child’s development if its mother stayed at home, surely contributed to feelings of guilt among mothers of autistic children. Her work also buttressed later resistance by psychoanalysts to changing how autism is dealt with in France, since Dolto—the founding mother of French child psychoanalysis—was so clear on the point.
In 2015, she was named an honorary fellow of the Society for Technical Communication. Grandin's work has attracted the attention of philosophers interested in the moral status of animals. One view found in the academic literature is that Grandin's method of slaughter is a significant positive development for animals, but her attempts to formulate a moral defense of autism meat-eating have been less successful. Grandin has lectured widely about her first-hand experiences of the anxiety of feeling threatened by everything in her surroundings, and of being dismissed and feared, which motivates her work in humane livestock handling processes. She studied the behavior of cattle, how they react to ranchers, movements, objects, and light.

However, the HDI/IHDI results suggest that social adversity-related stress experienced in native countries, especially by paternal grandparents, is potentially a traumatic experience that may play a role in ASD development. The parents’ and grandparents’ migrant status frequency did not differ between ASD and control groups and was not associated with autism severity. The HDI/IHDI values of native countries were significantly lower for parents and grandparents of children with ASD compared with the controls, especially for paternal grandparents. Furthermore, HDI/IDHI levels from the paternal line were significantly negatively correlated with autism severity, particularly for social interaction impairments. I very much think that tennis is a good sport for individuals on the spectrum.

"I think it's just the rewards of getting to be friends with these colleagues who have autism -- it's not something you get in your typical corporate day-to-day experience," Robertson-Cawley said. SAP boasts a retention rate of about 90% for their autistic employees.

Zahid tries to educate the cop to understand that Sam has autism, but Zahid is put on the same situation as Sam, and they are both taken into custody to the police station. Doug informs the cop that Sam is his son, causing a cop to apologize for his misunderstandings and he places Sam's photo on his wall to remember him the next time he sees Sam. Zahid helps him to deceive his school counselor on his resume to appear to be interesting, even if Sam is a horrible liar. Furthermore, Zahid consents with Sam to have a sleepover with him at his house, in case if Sam who wants to live on-campus of college. Unfortunately, being very sound sensitive to Zahid's snoring and his alarm clock due to his autism, Sam leaves Zahid's house to return to his home.
In short, not every gifted child, nor every “absent-minded professor” has Asperger’s disorder. Instead, “prodigy” and “genius” do exist as independent conditions separate from any underlying disability or disorder. As if to avoid becoming too immersed in her own nostalgia or guilt, Sandrine creates some distance by focusing on some of the other residents.
Psychometric studies based on a normative sample of more than 18,000 questionnaires show high reliability, internal consistency, sensitivity, and specificity. The unparalleled research sample includes 15,138 children that mirror the U.S. population in terms of race, ethnicity, and socio-economic groups. ASQ-3’s high validity and reliability have been proven by extensive research.

I assumed that when there is not a willingness to accommodate and make room for "difference as difference " (Savarese et al., 2010, p. 7), exclusion and "disability" emerges. With a commitment to emic perspectives, I took up discourse theory and analysis, situating this study within a DP framework (Edwards & Potter, 1993) that was informed by certain aspects of conversation analysis and a social relational model of disability . While I situated this work within a DP frame, I attempted to work within and across discourse traditions; while I engaged in the research process, my theoretical understandings were challenged and altered. I assumed that those who take up discourse approaches "must remain methodological bricoleurs and refrain from developing an all-purpose technique for discourse analysis" (Torfing, 1999, p. 292).
